Today, the New York Times took a close look at the fast-paced world of power tool drag racing. The inherent fun of placing lightly modified power tools on the ground and watching them tear off down the street was not lost on them, apparently. Will attention from such a big publication make power tool drag racing a more mainstream sport? One can only hope. The Times even links to all sorts of how-to’s from sites like Instructables and Make. Get on board now, before ESPN ruins it! [NY Times]

I was messing around with merb the other day and wrote a quick app to check to see if your ssh key has been compromised due to the vulnerability found in the openssl package on Debian/Ubuntu. All you due is search for your ssh key fingerprint. All you need to do is fire up a terminal/shell and type:

ssh-keygen -l -f .ssh/id_rsa.pub # put the path to your ssh key

It should come back with something like

00:00:5b:35:76:4e:0b:24:01:a9:dc:bc:a5:b6:b6:b5

Just search for that and it will let you know if your key is compromised. Link to app: SSH Key Lookup

Ok, I setup lighttpd on my machine and found out lighttpd can’t handle some mod_rewrite directives (used with permalinks). Specifically, sending a request to index.php if a file couldn’t be found. Here is an easy work around. First, you need to make sure your current theme has a 404 page. Goto Presentation->Theme Editor and see if you have a template called “404 template”. If you don’t, just copy wp-content/themes/default/404.php to your theme directory:

cp wp-content/themes/default/404.php wp-content/themes/YOUR_THEME

Then edit the 404 template file and add:

	< ?php header("HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found"); ?>

at the top of the script. This is so pages that are not found actually send 404 response headers. This is important for search engine bots like google.

After that, edit lighttpd. You just need this line in your virtual host:

	server.error-handler-404 = "/index.php"

Thats it. Let me know if you have any issues with this.

Today I checked my email to find the following in my inbox from my bank located in Albany, NY:

June 7, 2006

Dear Justin Mazzi,

Capital Communications Federal Credit Union has engaged Cathedral Corporation as our paper and electronic statement processor. Cathedral creates and delivers all member statements on a monthly basis. In May, Cathedral performed some programming modifications that resulted in certain account statements being mailed to household addresses containing randomly generated account information and/or activity. We ask that you shred this information and rely entirely on your e-statement as we are confident this information is correct.

We have established additional verification controls to insure the protection, security and confidentiality of your account information. The erroneous paper statement does not contain enough identifying information to allow access to any of our members’ accounts. If, for any reason, you are still uncomfortable with the status of your account, we will convert your existing account to a new number and make arrangements for all corresponding details. Please email us at statements@capcomfcu.org or call our Call Center immediately at (800) 468-5500 Option 2 should you request your accounts to be converted.

I want to assure you that on behalf of the members of Capital Communications we are investigating whether to continue to utilize this vendor as we take this error very seriously. In the meantime, we are confident that the internal precautions that we have undertaken will provide the highest level of protection of your assets. Again, if you are uncomfortable in any way with the error that has taken place, we will immediately upon notification from you, provide a new account number and take care of all changes necessary.

We offer our sincerest apology for this situation and assure you that our continued focus is to maintain the integrity of our members’ data and the manner in which it is delivered to you. If you have further questions regarding this situation, please contact me at (518) 458-2195 extension 3204.

Sincerely,

Paula A. Stopera

Paula A. Stopera
President/CEO

So when I got home I checked my latest statement from them and sure enough I’ve got a statement addressed to me buy has all the information from someone elses account. It has there account number, recent transactions and balances. What I really want to know is who has my information and whos really to blame here.

This time, I have went from drupal to wordpress. Drupal was just too much for what I am doing, and I really like the feature set for wordpress. I’ve managed to migrated users, posts, comments, and downloads. Plus, I wrote a dynamic node redirect system. This way, old links like /node/71 will be auto-mapped to the new posts and send a 301 Permanently moved responses. Hopefully this will keep my search engine results the same. If anyone wants details on how to do this, just let me know and i would be happy post the converter. Otherwise, I’m not gonna bother creating a write up if no one needs such a thing.

On a side note, I only need one more person to signup and complete an offer for my free PSP. If you like DNS Control, you can help me out by signing up. I have already received a free iPod from this company, so its definitely legit.

Recently, someone told me about a site which helps you get a freeipod. It actually works which is a shock. To quote them

“No doubt you’ve all heard of the Gratis Network giveaway deals: sign up, complete a (sometimes) free offer, refer a ‘few’ friends, and get a free computer/ipod/TV. Assuming you do everything correctly, you do in fact get the advertised item. The first two steps are relatively easy, but it’s the referral part that’s hard. None of your friends are all that reliable, and they think you’re trying to scam them… that’s where the conga line comes in.

The equal opportunity conga is a list of people who have signed up for the Gratis Network Free ipod offer through THIS LINK. Every 12 hours, the link will change so that a randomly selected person on the list gets the credit for people who sign up. In other words, every 12 hours another person will be getting a free computer once this site picks up some steam.”

So you wanna a free ipod, just signup here
http://freeipods.com

then email 1macminiconga@gmail.com saying you have completed an offer along with your freeipod link. Thats it!

This version requires pycurl. This just makes us one step closer to a GTK version with more features. I currently do not program in GTK, so its more of an experiament. If you do know GTK and want to help me out, please let me know.

HALFMOON -- Brendan Brader isn't a typical boss.

He sits with his employees in a cubicle instead of the corner office. He lets them play Foosball or pingpong at work whenever they'd like. He wears a hoodie and jeans to work.

Then again, he's only 23.

Brader is chief executive at HostRocket.com Inc., a Web-hosting business started with John Reyes, a fellow 1999 Shenendehowa High School graduate who serves as chief technology officer. Since its founding five years ago, HostRocket has serviced more than 50,000 Web sites internationally.

The soft-spoken Brader was studying business and computer science at the University at Albany when he co-founded the business. He left college to focus on HostRocket.

"The business required full-time attention," he said. "We were growing at a tremendous rate and the business was becoming very successful."

Brader and Reyes faced challenges at the start. The business demanded their attention 24 hours a day, especially with customer support, and it was difficult to be a two-man show.

Brader said the business was funded initially with his sister's credit card.

In August 2001, HostRocket moved into its current data center at 21 Corporate Drive, in Capital Region Business Park off Route 9, so all the servers could be under one roof. The second-floor suite is lined with shelves of servers and fans circulating air to keep the machines cool. A Foosball table is near the entrance, and a pingpong table is toward the back of the office for employees' entertainment.

Today, there are 24 employees, all but one under age 26. The young staff mostly works part time doing technological support or administrative work in three shifts. Brader spends most of his time making marketing and directional decisions for HostRocket.

"To be a successful employer, I think you have to recognize that this is not reality, entrust the people you hired to tend the business, and let them feel as a part of the family," said Brader, who can be seen tooling around in a dark-silver Hummer H2 with the "1MPG" vanity plate.

HostRocket's marketing effort has been driven primarily by banner online advertising. Brader also has received a fair amount of business by participating in online Web-hosting discussion forums.

He declined to release revenue, other than to say the company does "several million a year in sales."

Next month, will be wearing a new hat as owner of a Quiznos Sub store on North Pearl Street in Albany. The transition from Web space to sandwiches doesn't seem to shake Brader's confidence. "It's good not to have every single egg in one basket," he said. "Even if the basket's doing well."

He still will remain hands-on in the promotion of HostRocket, which strives to uphold its reputation as offering many Web-hosting features at an affordable price. Brader said his long-term goal is to keep improving customer service and server uptime.

Area businessmen in the Web industry are taking note of HostRocket and its young CEO.

"Web hosting is a very competitive business," said Kevin O'Connor, chief executive of Tech Valley Communications, an Albany-based telecommunications provider. "He's built a very nice business there."

O'Connor, who doesn't know Brader personally, commended him for taking the risk in the sandwich shop, which is quite different from Web hosting.

HostRocket serves as the corporate sponsor for the Shenendehowa High School Robotics Team, also known as The Rocketeers. Brader and Reyes have donated more than $20,000 to the team in the past couple years, and also serve as mentors for students. Both were active on the team during high school.

Paul Kane, the team's adviser, said he got a surprise visit one afternoon from Brader and Reyes, who handed him a check to support The Rocketeers. "I thought they were kidding," he said.

The Shenendehowa teacher said he found it gratifying to see his former students give back to the school. "It's a great feeling to have your kids do well and try to pay back some of that time and effort that you put into them," Kane said.

Here is what i found:

* RH9 to TAO 1.0 Upgrade Instructions: http://mailman.taolinux.org/pipermail/tao-discuss/2004-April/000185.html:

Step by step upgrade from RH9 to TAO 1.0

(From a post by Russ Herrold)
0. Take a backup, especially of /etc/, /root/ /home/ and
volatile parts in /var/

(I simply backed up all of /var/)

1. Make a note of the installed packages:
rpm -qa | sort > /root/pre-upgrade-manifest.txt

2. Remove any unused packages using the rpm -e method -
note that all content on my hosts is packaged in rpm, and I
almost NEVER use: rpm –nodeps or –force variants

3. Being sure that no other rpm affecting process is
running (yum counts here), rebuild the rpm database ‘just in

case’
rpm -vv –rebuilddb

4. Clean out 3-400 Meg of space below /var/cache/yum/
(if not possible, edit /etc/yum.conf to point at a
properly sized partition to hold the updates).

If, like me you used RH update to keep your machine up then you may have several kernels and selections for them in the boot up. I had LILO on this machine. When I did this upgrade it broke it. Yum added another kernel to the /etc/lilo.conf file and caused it to exceed the allowed limit. To prevent this, edit you /etc/lilo.conf and remove some of the old listings. I had to boot with an install disc, run linux rescue, edit the file and then do a /sbin/lilo -c . Afterwards I was able to boot.

Install yum from Duke

# rpm -Uvh –quiet http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/download/2.0/yum-2.0.6-1.noarch.rpm
(I actually used an installer from http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~erik/HOWTO/yum-installation-HOWTO.html)

# rpm –import http://dist.taolinux.org/tao-1.0-i386/dist/RPM-GPG-KEY-tao

Remove existing update and dependencies.

# rpm -e rhn-applet-2.0.9-0.9.0.1
# rpm -e up2date-gnome-3.1.23.2-1
# rpm -e up2date-3.1.23.2-1
# rpm -e firstboot-1.0.5-11
# rpm -e up2date-3.1.23.2-1

Create yum.conf in /etc with the following contents.
(The installer created one for it’s mirror pointing to RH files so I used the below version, which is modified from a virgin TAO install)

#BEGIN FILE
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
baseurl=http://dist.taolinux.org/tao-1.0-i386/updates
gpgcheck=1
#END FILE

NOTE: This is an install on a i386 machine. You will need to point to the appropriate directories for your processor IE replace i386. These can be found at http://dist.taolinux.org/

# yum upgrade

It will take a while and you may have some issues to resolve if you missed any packages in the beginning. If you do it will not have to download the headers again so it will go a little faster.

When it is finished retrieving all the packages it will display
“Running test transaction:”

This will take a little while.

Then it will display
“Test transaction complete, Success!”

Then it will set there for a while longer several minutes in my case.

Then you will see the processing of each package (814 for mine).

Don’t know how long this part took because I went to sleep at this point.

Reboot and enjoy. (I am now after fixing LILO.)

If you removed any apps in the beginning, you can now reinstall them if needed. Of course You do not need to reinstall up2date as this is for RedHat only.

This is as close to a step by step I can provide at this point. As noted above, I did not follow these steps exactly, but wrote them in the order that I would follow if I had to repeat this process. The was performed on a Dell 4300 Poweredge with dual PII350 and with software raid (Some scum swiped the controller card before I got the machine).

Use these instructions at your own risk.

* Upgrade from older Red Hat versions?: http://mailman.taolinux.org/pipermail/tao-discuss/2004-March/000144.html:

I am sorry at the delay in responding; I was travelling, and
have been wadeing through a lot of built up email.

As another has reported, a simple install is easier to upgrade
than a complex one. Something like this has worked for me:

0.	Take a backup, espectially of /etc/, /root/ /home/ and
volatle parts in /var/

Repeat this process after each pass.

4.	Clean out 3-400 Meg of space below /var/cache/yum/
(if not possible, edit /etc/yum.conf to point at a
properly sized partition to hold the updates). Clean after
each pass as appropiate

5. Point the /etc/yum.conf at an appropiate archive, and its
updates tree; note that is moving from a much older RHL
release, it is wise to go in ‘point’ steps — RHL 7.3 to RHL
8.0 to RHL 9.0, one at a time
yum upgrade

6.	Crossing from RHL 7.3 to RHL 8 will require getting
and configuring a new yum; ditto the step from RHL 8.0 to RHL
9.0. Use the recommended packages at the Duke yum prime site.

7.	Reboot between each update series, to get old glibc
versions out of play, and to get a later kernel in place.
Return to step 2 or 3, and repeat until you are at RHL 9.0

8. Point the /etc/yum.conf at an appropiate Tao archive
mirror, and its updates tree. Stems 3, and 7 at the end of
the process, of course.

9.	Adjustment of configuration files, and re-installation
of packages removed at step 2 as appropiate.

10.	Report experiences to the mailing list.

ymmv — remember step 0 is quite important.

– Russ Herrold

****** Some additional info you may need from doing the above:

One thing the above doesn’t mention is installing the tao specific RPMs like:

rpmdb-tao-1.3E.1-0.20031219
tao-logos-1.1.14.4-TL3
tao-artwork-1.0-TL1
tao-release-1.0-TL15

When you attempt to install them, it will tell you that they conflict with another package. Just remove the conflicting packages and proceed. It worked for me

Here is how I made the physics bug video posted on Steam Forums:

To start recored a in game, you run the following command in the console (the ~ key brings up console):

startmovie nameofmovie

Hit ESC to exit out of the console. When you are ready to stop recording, bring the console up again and type:

endmovie

You will have a bunch of files in:

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\USERNAME\half-life 2\hl2

They will be called nameofmovie###.tga as well as a .wav file. Where ### is a number. Take all those files and copy them into a new folder. You will then need to compile them into a movie. You can use this utility tga2avi.zip. You run it in a dos shell. To do this, goto Start->Run-> Type in cmd and hit [ENTER]. Cd to the directory you downloaded and extracted tga2avi to.

usage: tga2avi outfile framerate pattern start end step

c:\ tga2avi nameofmovie.avi 20 nameofmovie000.tga nameofmovie100.tga 1

This will compile 0 - 100 of the movie. You will need to start with 0 through whatever is the greatest number generated (depends on the length of the movie).

Next, get a copy of nandub.

One installed, run it and go to File->Open Video file and select the avi you made. Then goto Audio->Wav Audio and open the wav file. Then go to File->Save as avi(F7). Thats it! Let me know how it works out for you!
